Delight in Croatia’s Opatija Riviera

Explore ancient sites in the Istrian peninsula & Krk, sample wine & chocolate & enjoy other adventures from your seaside hotel on the Adriatic Sea.

About Your Trip

Pack your swimsuit — and your camera! — and get ready for an amazing week in paradise on the northern Adriatic Sea. Rich in culture and history, the coastal resort town of Opatija, Croatia, captivates with its heritage architecture, untouched beach coves, forested mountains and so much more. With 2 full-day tours and plenty of free time to check out area highlights on your own, you’re sure to make memories to last a lifetime on the Opatija Riviera!

Your first fascinating tour brings you to the Istrian peninsula to see the sights in some of the region’s most popular cities. From Opatija, you’ll head south along the scenic coastline to Pula, an ancient city known for well-preserved buildings from the Roman Empire such as Pula Arena (the Amphitheater), Temple of Augustus and more. Continue north along the western coast to Rovinj. Spend some time looking around on your own — the city’s historic old town features the hilltop Church of St. Euphemia, narrow cobblestone streets and squares lined with cafes. You’ll then head further north to Porec, a 2,000-year-old town boasting UNESCO-protected Euphrasian Basilica and busy Decumanus Street, before returning to Opatija.

You can expect another action-packed day on your second tour — this time on Krk island. After heading eastward along the coast, you’ll cross over one of the world’s longest concrete bridges to the ancient town of Krk. It’s here you’ll find Frankopan Castle, medieval fortification walls and other important historic architecture. From there, you’ll board a boat and ride out to Kosljun, an island known for the museum at St. Mary’s monastery. At Vrbnik on the east coast, enjoy a visit to a wine cellar — complete with a presentation on wine making and wine tasting — then set off back to the mainland and Opatija.

In your leisure time in Opatija, do as much or as little as you wish. Perhaps you'll check out notable spots such as Villa Angiolina? Built in 1844 by a nobleman as his summer house, the building is now home to Croatian Museum of Tourism — around the Villa you’ll also find a botanical park that offers a picture-perfect variety of trees and shrubs. Or, visit the town’s the oldest structure, a 15th-century Benedictine abbey now known as St. Jacob (or St. Jakov) church. Be sure to go for a stroll along the seafront promenade Lungomare that runs the entire riviera — it’s dotted with bars, restaurants, beaches and historical buildings so there’s always something to do or see! Once you’ve had your fill of walking around this pretty and charming town, you can soothe aching muscles with your included discount for massage treatments at Wellness Oasis in Amadria Park Grand Hotel.

What we love:
• A UNESCO World Heritage site, Episcopal Complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in the Historic Centre of Porec comprises a basilica with a bell tower, baptistry and stunning mosaics.
• Placed prominently along Lungomare is the statue “Girl with the Seagull,” the symbol of the city.
• Typical souvenirs from Opatija include truffles, wine, honey, olive oil and Camellia cake.
• To maximize your enjoyment, download the DreamTrips™ app to access DreamTrips Local — then earn points on dining, entertainment, spa experiences & more at select spots recommended by DreamTrippers just like you!

Destination

A small resort town, Opatija is nestled at the foot of Ucka mountain as it slopes toward the Adriatic Sea. Gorgeous historic hotels include Hotel Quarnero, built in 1884 and now Hotel Kvarner, and Hotel Kronprinzessin Stephanie, built in 1885 and now Hotel Imperial.
